Artists Victoria Lucas and Richard William Wheater have collaborated for the past year to create this glowing, self-funded public project entitled 12 Months of Neon Love. Featuring lyrics from popular songs, the team produced a series of twelve expressive signs that were displayed on the roof of their Neon Workshops in West Yorkshire, England. For one month, red snippets of song lyrics including “Love is a losing game…” and “No more I love yous” glowed from the rooftop as a visual representation of the complexities of love. Commuters on passing trains could catch a glimpse of the fleeting words as the train zipped by.
The project was specifically born by combining the artists’ two unique passions: Wheater is passionate about neon and Lucas is passionate about the subject of time. The artists say, “By touching on something universal, the work strives to initiate a thought or memory in the viewer concerning their own experiences of love; as well as providing a heartfelt sentiment for them to take with them on their journey.” Upon completion of the project and when the last lights were turned off, the artists held an auction to sell six of the twelve neon signs. Most recently, a Limited Edition Artists’s Book was published, which features the project in its entirety and can be purchased through the artists’ website.
