Matt Black’s “The People of Clouds” is a long-term examination of the lives of Mixtec migrant workers, a community that he first encountered near his home, in California’s Central Valley, in the late nineteen-nineties. “I noticed a shift in the people I was photographing in the fields around my home town,” he told me. They came, he said, “from remote villages in the country’s deep south. Isolated by culture and language, they’ve been caught in a vicious circle of abuse: earning the lowest wages, paying the highest rents, and living under constant threat of deportation.”
